SEVEN

Tristan and Isolde sit at the supper table, eating their soup and cornbread. She smiles to herself at the memory of dicing the pork and making the soup. It really was as easy as he said, although he did save her from near catastrophe when she attempted to pull the can lid off and it was still half attached. She shudders to think of the injury she almost had when he told her how quickly a can lid can cut through the skin.

“What you thinking about?” he asks when he sees the look on her face.

“You were right. This supper is really easy to make.”

A triumphant look fills his face, but she doesn’t mind. “See? Cooking isn’t as intimidating as you think.”

She takes another bite of soup and swallows. “Yeah, well. Don’t go getting any ideas now. I’m not going to like start cooking every night or anything.”

He takes a long drink of water. “So why did you want to become an accountant?” he asks her to change the subject.

She frowns a little. “Didn’t we cover this at my job interview?”

He shakes his head. “Um, no. I don’t think so.” He grins an ornery grin. “You were too busy demanding I hire you.”

She leans back in her chair and ignores his dig. “I don’t know. I’ve always been good with numbers. I like organization. I like things that add up and make sense.”

He nods his head. “I hear you.”

She studies him. “Why did you want to become an accountant?”

He grins. “No one has ever asked me that.” He holds up a finger. “At first, I wanted to be a teacher, but I’m not creative enough to inspire difficult children to learn, so then I decided to do what was what was expected of me. My dad was an accountant. His father passed the business onto him, and then he just passed it onto me.”

She looks surprised. “I had no idea you had that many generations of accountants in your family.” She shakes her head. “What would your father have said if you wanted to be something else?”

He chuckles. “I guess he would have had to sell his business when he retired.” He leans over his plate. “I don’t mind doing what my father did. It’s kind of nice to not try to figure out what I want to do with my life.”

She giggles. “So you never wanted to be anything else?”

He smiles at her. “Well, I had dreams in my teens like most boys do, I suppose. I wanted to be a professional baseball player, but by my junior year in high school, I kind of knew that wasn’t in the cards for me.”

Her forehead wrinkles in thought. “I didn’t know you liked baseball.”

He takes another bite of soup and studies her. “How could you know? You would have been like twelve at the time.” He closes his eyes and thinks. “I don’t recall seeing you or your dad at any of my games.”

She blushes. “No. My dad was mostly a homebody when he wasn’t at work.
